ACID A compound or chemical used to adjust pH and total alkalinity.
ACID DEMAND The amount of acid required to lower the pH of pool water to the recommended level
ACIDIC The condition of pool water that will cause corrosion; pH lower than 7.
ALGAE Microscopic forms of plant life (some free-floating, others clinging).  Some strains more resistant than others.  Discolor water and pool surfaces
ALGICIDE See BAQUACIL ALGICIDE.
ALGISTAT Chemical used to prevent algae from growing.
AUTOMATIC POOL SWEEP/VACUUM An automatic pool cleaning system.
BACKWASH  A method used to remove trapped debris from diatomaceous earth or sand filter by reversing the flow of water through it.  Cartridge filters are removed and hosed off to remove debris
BACKWASH VALVE Valve that reverses the flow of water through the filter.
BACTERIA Simple cell organisms that contaminate a pool.  Can be introduced from the environment and by swimmers.
BAQUA PLUS OXIDIZER INCREASER Granular A chemical in granular form used weekly to help maintain the level of BAQUACIL SHOCK AND OXIDIZER on a continuous basis.
BAQUA PLUS OXIDIZER INCREASER Tablet A chemical in tablet form used weekly to help maintain the level of BAQUACIL SHOCK AND OXIDIZER on a continuous basis.
BAQUA PLUS Program A modified version of the BAQUACIL Pool Care System.
BAQUA PLUS Test Strips Strips to be used on a weekly basis by consumers on the BAQUA PLUS Program to test total alkalinity, pH, BAQUACIL SANITIZER AND ALGISTAT, and BAQUACIL SHOCK AND OXIDIZER levels.
BAQUACIL ALGICIDE Chemical used to control algae. Formerly called "Baqua Check 50."
BAQUACIL CALCIUM HARDNESS INCREASER A dry chemical used to raise the hardness level in the pool water
BAQUACIL CHLORINE NEUTRALIZER Neutralizes chlorine when converting to the BAQUACIL Pool Care System.  Formerly called "Baqua Start."
BAQUACIL COVER CLEANER A chemical used to clean and lubricate covers prior to storage.  Formerly called "Baqua Fresh."
BAQUACIL FILTER AID A chemical used to assist the filter in clarifying dull or cloudy water.  BAQUACIL FILTER AID can be used with all filter and sanitizer types.  Formerly called "Baq Aid."
BAQUACIL FILTER CLEANER Swimming pool filter cleaner. Formerly called "Baqua Clean."
BAQUACIL FLOCCULANT A chemical used to clarify water by pulling together particles to form a heavy floc that settles to the pool bottom and is removed by vacuuming to waste.  Formerly called "Baqua Floc."
BAQUACIL FOAM DISPERSER A chemical used to control foaming of pool water.  Formerly called "Baqua Burst."
BAQUACIL METAL CONTROL Chemical used to tie-up with dissolved metals, preventing discoloration of the pool water and staining of pool sides and bottom.  Formerly called "BAQ out."
BAQUACIL PERFORMANCE ALGICIDE Allow foaming algicide for the treatment of persistent algae.  Formerly called "Baquacide 1000."
BAQUACIL pH DECREASER A granular chemical used to lower pH and total alkalinity.
BAQUACIL pH INCREASER  A chemical used to raise the pH to the recommended level.
BAQUACIL SHOCK AND OXIDIZER A 27% solution of hydrogen peroxide: a non chlorine oxidizer used to remove organic compounds (swimmer waste) from pool water.  Formerly called "Baqua Shock"
BAQUACIL SURFACE CLEANER A highly concentrated gel that is used to clean pool surfaces.  Formerly called "Baqua Brite."
BAQUACIL SWIMMING POOL SANITIZER AND ALGISTAT A highly effective polymeric swimming pool sanitizer and algistat that contains no chlorine and is highly stable in use.

BASE A compound or chemical used To raise pH.
BASE DEMAND Amount of base required to raise pH of the pool water to recommended level
BASIC A condition of pool water that will cause scaling: pH higher than 7.
BATHERLOAD The number of people using the pool during a period of time.
BROADCAST Even distribution of BAQUACIL FLOCCULANT mixture across the pool
BUFFER A substance capable in solution of neutralizing both acid and base, thereby maintaining original pH.
BUMP A physical means of redistributing diatomaceous earth on finger (regenerative) type D.E. filters.
CALCIUM CHLORIDE See BAQUACIL CALCIUM HARDNESS INCREASER.
CALCIUM HARDNESS The amount of dissolved calcium in the pool water.  See BAQUACIL CALCIUM HARDNESS INCREASER.
CARTRIDGE FILTER A filter for pool water that uses paper or fabric-like cartridges to remove suspended matter.
CHELATING AGENT See BAQUACIL METAL CONTROL.
CLARIFIER/COAGULANT A chemical used to attract negatively charged particles suspended in pool water.  This makes these particles easier for the filter to remove and clears the water.
CORROSION/ETCHING The attack or dissolving of metal pool components (ladder, pump, and heater) or concrete, plaster, or marcite finish on the pool sides and bottom.
DIATOMACEOUS EARTH (D.E.) A porous powder with microscopic openings, that, when magnified, look like tiny sponges.  Clear water can pass through these openings but particles, as small as one to three microns, are trapped the first pass through the media
DIATOMACEOUS EARTH FILTER A filter for pool water that uses diatomaceous earth, which consists of tiny prehistoric diatom skeletons.  They are very porous and provide an excellent filter media
DPD #1 Reagent used in the determination of free available chlorine.  
FILTER AID A chemical added directly to the filter to clarify the pool water by improving filtration.
FILTRATION The removal of fine particles (suspended solids) from pool water by passing the water through a filter.
FLOCCULATING AGENT See BAQUACIL FLOCCULANT.
FOAM See BAQUACIL FOAM DISPERSER
HARD WATER A condition where the calcium and magnesium levels in the  water are very high.
HOUSEKEEPING The process of removing debris, such as dirt and leaves, from the sides and bottom of a pool by brushing and vacuuming.
METALS cause staining to pool sides and bottom.  The three most common sources of copper are source water, algicides, and water heaters.  The most common source of iron is well water.
MULTIPORT OR DIAL VALVE A valve used to divert water flow in one of six directions: Filter and vacuum, backwash, drain to waste, closed, recirculate, and rinse
OTO A reagent used to test for total chlorine (free + combined).
PARTS PER MILLION The accepted measurement of chemical concentration in swimming pool water.
pH A measurement of acidity or basicity of pool water.  Proper ranges in a BAQUACIL Pool Care System pool are 7.2 to 7.8 below 7.0, pool water is acidic and will corrode pool equipment and damage the pool surface.  Above 7.8, pool water is too basic -- which may result in cloudiness and scale formation.  Improper pH balance also affects the germ-killing power of chlorine.  The germicidal activity of BAQ SANITIZER AND ALGISTAT is not linked to pH.
pH BOUNCE Drastic changes in pH levels.

REAGENT A substance used to detect or measure chemical level.
SAND FILTER A pool water filter that uses fine silica sand as its filter media.
SANITIZER A chemical used to kill bacteria and other disease causing organisms.
SATURATION INDEX Commonly called the Langelier Saturation Index.  A mathematical value based on the interrelation of temperature, calcium hardness, total alkalinity, and pH.  Determines whether the pool water is corrosive, scale forming, or acceptably balanced.
SCALE A gritty substance that forms on the pool surfaces, pumps, and other pool components when the pH, total alkalinity, and calcium hardness are to high.

SODIUM BISULFATE See BAQUACIL pH DECREASER

SOFT WATER A condition where the calcium and the magnesium levels in the water are very low.
SOURCE WATER The water that is used to fill the pool, such as well, municipal-treated tap, or softened water.
SUSPENDED SOLIDS Fine, visible particles suspended in the pool water. May or may not be filtered.
SWIMMER WASTE The amount of dirt, oil, and perspiration that enters a pool from the people using it.
TOTAL ALKALINITY The amount of carbonates, bicarbonates, and hydroxides in the pool.  A high total alkalinity causes pH to resist adjustments to the desired range.  A low total alkalinity makes it difficult to maintain pH within the desired range.
TOTAL DISSOLVED SOLIDS The total amount of materials (solids) dissolved in the water; solids you can't see.
TURBIDITY A measure of the clarity of a water sample
TURNOVER The time in which the pump moves a certain quantity of the pool's water.
WATER BALANCE A condition achieved when the pH, total alkalinity, calcium hardness, and total dissolved solids are all within their recommended ranges.
WATER QUALITY The degree or grade of excellence of pool water.  Water quality is affected by physical factors, biological factors, and water balance.
WINTERIZING A physical and chemical treatment procedure used to close pools for winter or off season.
